Biography

William Gerald Golding was a British novelist, playwright, and poet, most recognized for his first novel, *Lord of the Flies* (1954). Throughout his career, he authored 12 works of fiction. In 1980, he received the Booker Prize for *Rites of Passage*, the initial volume in his sea trilogy *To the Ends of the Earth*. Golding was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1983.
