Jake Epping, a small-town English teacher, learns from a friend about a portal that connects the present to 1960. His friend asks him to help by traveling back in time to stop the assassination of John F. Kennedy, by uncovering the true identity of the killer and preventing the event from occurring.

Haunted by the impossibility of his mission, Jake travels to Holden, Kentucky to save the family of his friend Harry Dunning, who were all murdered on Halloween by Harry's father, Frank. But does Jake have what it takes to kill a man?

Jake finds an unlikely ally in his quest in the form of local drifter Bill Turcote. He secures a teaching job in a small town near Dallas and develops a romantic connection with the school librarian, Sadie Dunhill. Jake leads a double life, spying on Lee Harvey Oswald at night as the potential assassin within him begins to emerge. As he trails Oswald, Jake is drawn into the darker underbelly of Dallas, where he comes to realize that Oswald may not be the only threat to Kennedy.

Jake and Bill's partnership begins to falter as they uncover more secrets about the unpredictable Lee Harvey Oswald. The conspiracy surrounding Oswald grows more complex, while a romance develops between Jake and Sadie. However, by involving an innocent bystander, Jake may have put his new love in danger.
