Bonekickers was a BBC drama centered on a team of archaeologists at the fictional Wessex University. The series premiered on 8 July 2008 and consisted of one series. The show was written by Matthew Graham and Ashley Pharoah, the creators of *Life on Mars* and *Ashes to Ashes*. It was produced by Michele Buck and Damien Timmer of Mammoth Screen Ltd, with co-production by Monastic Productions. Mark Horton, an archaeologist and academic at Bristol University, served as the series' archaeological consultant. Adrian Lester described the programme as "CSI meets Indiana Jones," noting that it combined elements of a crime procedural with science and conspiracy theories, along with a central mystery that spanned all six episodes. Much of the series was filmed in the City of Bath, Somerset, with scenes shot on the University of Bath campus. Additional filming locations included Brean Down Fort, Kings Weston House, Chavenage House for episodes 5 and 6, and Sheldon Manor. On 21 November 2008, *Broadcast* magazine announced that the show would not be returning for a second series.
