In a futuristic, nearly lifeless world, humanity is confined to mechanized domed cities where artificial intelligence controls all aspects of life. In this society, humans are no longer born but are instead manufactured on an assembly line, living alongside androids known as autoreivs. Within one of these enclosed cities, Romdeau, resides Re-l Mayer, one of the few citizens who retain some degree of independent thought. Her grandfather's high status and the favor of the scientist Daedalus have granted her more freedom than is typically permitted. However, Re-l has begun to question the city's supposed utopia and the perfection of its way of life. As mysterious entities called proxies begin to cause chaos and a man named Vincent exerts a growing influence on her, Re-l must venture beyond the city's boundaries to uncover the truth and unravel the mystery of "the awakening."
