The crew of *Serenity* is hired by a crime lord to carry out a train heist. After successfully stealing the cargo, they discover it consists of medicine urgently required by a town.

Serenity is drawn in by a Tohoku-class cruiser while investigating a spaceship that has been attacked by Reavers. Simon and River are forced to hide to avoid being captured, as something is amiss with the sole survivor of the attacked vessel.

As an unexpected reward for an unpaid job, Mal is unexpectedly married to a naïve and subservient young woman named Saffron. The crew finds amusement in his discomfort, and Book delivers a lecture on propriety, though the situation proves to be more complicated than they initially anticipated.

Jayne returns to a planet where he encountered significant trouble years earlier and finds that he has become a local folk legend. Mal intends to use this distraction to his advantage in completing a job, but unresolved issues may interfere with his plans.

When Serenity experiences a catastrophic event that leaves her crew with only hours of oxygen, flashbacks reveal how Mal and Zoë came to acquire the ship and how they gathered their diverse crew.

Inara attends a formal society dance, only to discover that Malcolm is also there, attempting to set up a smuggling job. Mal gets into a physical altercation with Inara's conceited date and ends up facing a duel with a renowned swordsman, leaving him with just one night to learn how to fence.

Mal faces the difficult decision of which crew members to rescue when one is critically injured and two are taken captive. Meanwhile, Simon finds a fragile refuge in a secluded village, though River's unusual insights threaten to compromise the Tams' short-term security.

Serenity, in need of money, accepts a job from Simon to obtain a comprehensive diagnostic of River in exchange for the chance to access the extensive medical supplies of an Alliance hospital located on the central world of Ariel. However, River's pursuers are quickly closing in, and the crew receives unexpected assistance from an insider.

Wash, angered by Zoë's continued military ties to Mal, insists on being given a field assignment. At the same time, crime lord Niska seeks harsh retribution for Mal's failure to complete a previous job.

Serenity faces off against Jubal Early, a ruthless and highly professional bounty hunter determined to capture River. Feeling out of place on the ship, River takes an unconventional route to evade the Alliance and escape Early's grasp.

Malcolm Reynolds, a veteran and the captain of the ship *Serenity*, leads a crew engaged in smuggling goods. To supplement their income, they take on passengers, though not all of these passengers turn out to be what they appear.
