Gon is a young boy with a dream of becoming a hunter, just like his father, Ging. To prove his ability, he sets out to catch a legendary lake monster. Although his aunt Mito is hesitant, she ultimately allows him to pursue this goal, motivated by his determination to discover why Ging left and to follow his own passion.

Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio arrive in Dolle Harbor and follow the captain's directions to a cedar tree on a hill behind the town. As they travel through the area, they encounter a group of people who present them with a critical choice; selecting the wrong option, refusing to choose, or turning back will cause them to fail the exam.

Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio arrive in Zaban City with the assistance of navigators and are brought to a restaurant that operates as a cover for the exam's actual location. They are guided through a concealed elevator to a site deep underground, where they join other participants and are given numbered assignments. There, they encounter Tonpa, an experienced examinee who has taken the exam 35 times without passing.

During the first test, many participants drop out due to exhaustion after running over forty kilometers. Leorio nearly gives up but is motivated by Gon, who waits for him, and Killua, another participant, takes interest in Gon's personality, noting they are the same age. Kurapika and Leorio discuss their reasons for becoming hunters—Kurapika seeks revenge against the Phantom Troupe for destroying his clan, while Leorio wants to become a doctor to provide free medical care, inspired by his friend's death from an untreated illness. The remaining participants eventually reach the surface and arrive at the Numere Wetlands, also known as Swindlers' Swamp.

A thick fog settles over the swamp as Satotz guides the group, triggering chaos through traps and dangerous creatures that incapacitate or kill several participants. Gon, Killua, Leorio, and Kurapika become separated and are each attacked by monsters. Meanwhile, Hisoka is targeted by a group of candidates, but he easily defeats them and then focuses on Leorio and Kurapika, who flee in opposite directions. Leorio, however, returns for a confrontation and is severely beaten. Gon arrives to confront Hisoka, landing a single hit before being overpowered.

Gon and Kurapika reunite with Leorio and Killua at the location for the Hunter Exam's Phase Two, where the remaining candidates meet the examiners Menchi and Buhara. The second phase unexpectedly assesses their cooking skills, tasking them with hunting carnivorous pigs in a forest. Using Gon's insight, they successfully complete the challenge. The candidates then undergo evaluation, which sparks a disagreement between the examiners, prompting a retest involving spider eagle eggs.

Beans, Neteros' secretary, instructs the candidates to rest before the next phase of the exam. As Tonpa tries to disrupt Kurapika and Leorio, Gon and Killua explore the airship, during which Killua reveals his background as an assassin. Neteros tests their instincts and challenges them to a game, offering immediate passage to whoever can take a ball from him before dawn, although they soon realize the task is far beyond their current abilities.

The candidates reach Trick Tower, the location of the Phase Three exam, and are required to descend from the top to the bottom. Inside the tower, several candidates find concealed doors, but each door can only be used once by a single person, leading the group to separate. Eventually, they gather in a room where they are handed special wristwatches and given instructions that require at least five members to move forward, with one of the examiners explaining that they have selected the path of majority rule.

Tonpa feigns surrender at the start of the fight, which angers Leorio, but he later explains that he was attempting to destabilize less experienced opponents. Gon competes against Sedokan in a candle-burning contest, where he is tricked into selecting a candle soaked in oil that burns faster, requiring him to act swiftly to disrupt the match. Kurapika faces Majitani in a no-weapon death match and quickly defeats him by provoking a violent response.

A female prisoner accuses Majitani of feigning unconsciousness, preventing Kurapika from ending their match, as he refuses to fight someone who has surrendered. Leorio tries to resolve the situation using majority rule but fails to gain support, while Hisoka easily defeats Togari, a former examiner seeking revenge, and moves on to the next phase. To determine Majitani's actual condition, Leorio enters a high-stakes betting game with the prisoner, ultimately forcing Majitani to admit defeat after a tense confrontation, though the team still has limited time to make further wagers.

Leroute, a fellow prisoner, enters into a series of bets with Leorio concerning her gender. Leorio loses the bets and is allowed to confirm Leroute's identity, only to be proven wrong. After a game of rock, paper, scissors, Killua confronts and defeats the notorious killer Johness the Dissector, earning the team points and allowing them to pass the trial. However, they must wait 50 hours due to Leorio's failed wagers. Meanwhile, Gittarackur and Hanzo complete the third phase of the trials.

The team is kept in a small room for fifty hours, trying to cope with boredom, before encountering a sequence of challenges that include traps and illusions. In the final room, they must choose between a long and arduous path that everyone can take or a faster shortcut that would leave two members behind, sparking conflicts and discussions. Gon comes up with an ingenious solution by merging both routes, enabling the whole group to move forward together.

Gon starts writing a letter to his aunt Mito, describing his journey from the beginning of the Hunter exam through his meetings with Leorio, Kurapika, Killua, and other examinees.

Gon trains to enhance his accuracy with his chain in hopes of stealing Hisoka's number plate. After mastering the technique, he tries to carry out the theft while Hisoka is occupied with another target.

Gon employs Bloodcrazy Butterflies to locate Hisoka, intending to use his fishing rod ability to capture Hisoka's tag at the opportune moment. Leorio is tricked by Tonpa and briefly loses his tag, though Kurapika assists him in recovering it. Upon realizing they are not each other's intended targets, Kurapika and Leorio choose to join forces.

Kurapika and Leorio meet Hisoka but manage to avoid a direct confrontation by negotiating with him. Feeling both frustrated and intrigued, Hisoka leaves to seek out another opponent. However, during an attack, Gon manages to take Hisoka's Hunter tag. As Gon attempts to escape, he is ambushed by another Hunter applicant and ends up losing his own tag.

Killua, frustrated by Imori's constant presence, confronts him and easily defeats him in a fight. Meanwhile, Gon, Leorio, and Kurapika work together to track down Ponzu, using her tag to locate her in a mysterious cave, where Leorio insists on entering alone.

Gon and his friends are trapped in a cave rigged with a deadly snake-based trap set by the deceased examinee Bourbon, and only Gon can find a way to save them and advance to the next stage of the exam. As Leorio's condition worsens from a snakebite, the group faces both physical and psychological challenges. Before proceeding, the remaining applicants are summoned for interviews with Chairman Netero.

Gon and his friends reach the final stage of the Hunter Exam, a tournament in which competitors are eliminated for winning and rewarded for losing. The challenge prohibits the killing of opponents, resulting in a strategic and dangerous competition. In the first match, Gon faces the powerful Hanzo, struggling to keep up but refusing to surrender as Hanzo becomes increasingly frustrated.

Gon awakens to find Satotz congratulating him for becoming the first to pass the Hunter Exam. He learns from Satotz that the Exam has ended and is told what transpired after he lost consciousness, leading to a surprising revelation.

Gon is disturbed by Killua's forced act of killing and becomes angry with Illumi, vowing to travel to Kukuroo Mountain to save him. As Gon and his companions begin their journey, Satotz hints that the Hunter Exam still has more trials to come.

Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio make their way to Kukuroo Mountain in search of the Zoldyck family estate, only to find the area completely enclosed and under heavy guard. A gatekeeper informs them that the only entrance is through a large stone gate, which opens when a force of at least two tons is applied to each side. Leorio tries to move the gate but is unsuccessful, leading the group to explore other possible ways inside.

Gon and his friends journey to the Trial Gate with the goal of reuniting with Killua. Before they can proceed, they must complete a training regimen at the servants' residence. After successfully finishing their training, they attempt to reach Killua, but their path is blocked by the apprentice butler Canary.

With Canary's help, Gon and his friends advance toward the mansion in their search for Killua, but they learn from Kikyo that Killua is in solitary confinement and unable to meet with them. At the same time, Killua is called by Silva, who offers him the opportunity to see his friends. After answering truthfully, Killua is allowed to visit them.

Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio arrive at the Butler's Quarters and are greeted by the Head Butler, who entertains them while they wait for Killua. The Butler suggests a mysterious game, prompting the group to speculate about its purpose and the possible consequences it may entail.

Mito receives a letter from Gon at Whale Island, prompting a recap of past events.

In his first match in the 200s division of the Heavens Arena, Gon faces off against the Nen user Gido. Using Ten to defend himself, Gon struggles as Gido overwhelms him with his Nen ability, the Dancing Tops. In a moment of desperation, Gon makes a risky and unconventional choice to turn the tide of the battle.

A month after Gon's severe injury, Hisoka prepares to face Kastro in Heavens Arena, where Kastro had previously defeated him and now expresses confidence in a rematch. Hisoka, however, remains calm and unfazed by the upcoming battle.

Kastro uses his Nen ability to create a clone and amputates one of Hisoka's arms, gaining a temporary advantage. Despite losing both arms, Hisoka remains composed, which causes Kastro to panic and launch a reckless attack.

After a two-month break from using Nen, Gon and Killua are allowed to train again when Gido, Sadaso, and Riehlvelt challenge them to a battle in the arena. Gon and Killua initially refuse the challenge, but Killua grows suspicious of Sadaso's odd behavior.

Gon faces off against Gido and Riehlvelt individually, driven by a desire for revenge over how they treated Zushi. Although they put up a fight, Gon demonstrates resilience against Gido's attacks and ultimately takes the advantage, prompting a reaction of amusement from Hisoka.

The Phantom Troupe, a notorious group of thieves, converges on York New City for the world's largest auction, following orders from their leader, Chrollo. As the members assemble, it becomes clear that the Troupe is preparing to execute a major operation.

Gon, Killua, and Leorio work to gather funds in order to purchase Greed Island, while Kurapika is tasked with overseeing the auction house. As the auction approaches, the Phantom Troupe moves closer to York New City, setting the stage for an inevitable confrontation.

The Phantom Troupe carries out a bold raid on a Mafia-run underground auction, stealing all the items and taking the attendees hostage. In response, the Mafia offers a reward for information leading to the Troupe's capture and begins a manhunt. Kurapika and his bodyguards, while on patrol, become involved in the pursuit, drawing him closer to the Phantom Troupe.

Uvogin evades pursuit by the Mafia, including their secret weapon, the Shadow Beasts. During the confrontation, a spider tattoo on his back is revealed, prompting Kurapika to step in.

Kurapika captures Uvogin, a member of the Phantom Troupe, but finds himself challenged by the captive's arrogant demeanor. As tensions rise, Kurapika is interrupted by a mysterious email from Hisoka.

Uvogin escapes with the help of his bandit allies but becomes determined to confront and defeat Kurapika after experiencing a blow to his pride. Kurapika, aware that the Phantom Troupe has discovered their location, moves the boss to safety and stays behind to face the approaching group.

Kurapika engages in a battle against Uvogin, a confrontation that highlights the challenge posed by Uvogin's powerful abilities. As the conflict escalates, the extent of Kurapika's own strength—and the potential hidden within his chains—comes into question.

Gon, Killua, and Leorio try to raise money to buy Greed Island by purchasing and reselling valuable items they find in a market. Gon discovers a technique to identify high-value objects, but their efforts become complicated when another bidder starts competing for the same items.

Gon and his companions pursue a reward by tracking down members of the Phantom Troupe, while Machi and Nobunaga search for a mysterious "chain user" following Uvogin's absence. Gon and Killua follow a lead that places them on the trail of two Troupe members.

Gon and Killua are captured by the Phantom Troupe and questioned about a mysterious chain user the group is searching for, although the boys are unaware that the user is Kurapika. Just before they are to be released, Nobunaga decides to keep them as potential recruits for the Troupe.

The auction has been postponed, and the Mafia expects another attack from the Phantom Troupe. In response, the Ten Dons recruit several assassins to eliminate the Troupe, and Light Nostrade sends Kurapika to assist in their mission.

The Troupe initiates a full-scale assault on an auction, overcoming the Ten Dons' hired assassins, although Zeno and Silva present significant challenges.

Kurapika is shocked to hear of the death of the Phantom Troupe's leader and tries to confirm the report by viewing the body. At the same time, the remains of other members of the Troupe are discovered, prompting uncertainty about their fate.

Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio reunite, and Kurapika showcases his Nen abilities to his friends. Killua grows worried about Kurapika's safety due to a Troupe member's mind-reading ability, while Chrollo employs stolen fortune-telling powers to foresee the fates of his fellow Troupe members.

Chrollo provides fortunes for each member of the Phantom Troupe, leading them to believe Hisoka has betrayed them. Determined to fight Chrollo, Hisoka takes a dangerous step by changing his own fate. Learning the Troupe is still alive, Kurapika joins forces with Gon and his allies to devise a plan to capture Pakunoda.

Chrollo employs his knowledge of Neon to locate Kurapika, the chain user. Meanwhile, Killua, who has been keeping watch over the Phantom Troupe's base, is joined by Melody, and together they learn that the group is heading toward Kurapika's location. The Troupe is now close to reaching him.

The Phantom Troupe learns that Kurapika is responsible for Uvogin's death, suggesting that Gon and Killua, who are now captured, may be his allies. Chrollo brings them to the hotel lobby, where the rest of the Troupe, including Pakunoda, are waiting. As the lights go out, Gon and Killua try to escape, only to realize that Chrollo has vanished into the darkness.

Kurapika captures Chrollo and offers a trade: Chrollo's freedom in exchange for Pakunoda handing over Gon and Killua. Despite his strategy, Kurapika has difficulty keeping his emotions in check while facing the Troupe leader.

Gon and Killua try to enter the high-stakes game Greed Island in hopes of finding a clue about Ging's location, but they are turned away because their Nen abilities are too weak. Resolved to meet the requirements, they begin training to build stronger skills and develop special abilities.

Gon and Killua take part in the selection process for the Greed Island game, competing against 199 other applicants for one of 32 available spots. The judge, Tsezgerra, states that he will determine who advances based on their demonstration of Nen abilities.

Gon and Killua enter the world of Greed Island in search of Ging, but instead find a message instructing Gon to "enjoy the game." They travel to a city to gather information and are offered an invitation to join a team attempting to complete the game.

Gon and Killua journey to Masadora in search of spell cards, encountering a variety of monsters during their travels. As they progress, the challenges become more intense, with each battle featuring increasingly powerful creatures. Their efforts are observed by a girl named Biscuit.

Gon and Killua acknowledge Biscuit's expertise in Nen and ask for her help in learning the art. They dedicate themselves to an intense and demanding training program under her instruction.

Gon and Killua continue to develop their Nen abilities under Bisky's instruction, growing more assured as they easily overcome creatures they previously found difficult. As their training approaches its end, the enigmatic Bomber arrives to observe the players who have allied together.

Gon begins developing a unique fighting style inspired by rock-paper-scissors, drawing on three of his abilities: Enhancer, Emitter, and Conjurer. During this time, Killua temporarily departs to take the Hunter Exam, and in his absence, Gon and Bisky uncover new information regarding the Bomber's most recent attack.

Killua returns after successfully passing the Hunter Exam on his second attempt. Reuniting with Gon and Bisky, the trio begins collecting cards to progress in the game, while other competitors plot to obtain the cards they need.

Team Genthru strengthens its lead by obtaining 96 restricted slot cards through deceptive means, leading Gon and Killua to seek alliances with other players in an effort to prevent them from winning the game. They journey to Soufrabi in an attempt to take control of the Patch of Shore, a crucial card that Genthru still requires to complete its strategy.

To acquire the Patch of Shore, Gon and his crew must expel a group of fifteen pirates from the town. After being defeated by the pirate leader Razor, they choose to bolster their team by recruiting the player Chrollo.

Gon and his friends team up with Hisoka, Goreinu, and Team Tsezgerra to confront Razor again. After winning the early matches with ease, they face an unexpected challenge when Razor suggests a game of dodgeball.

Gon loses hold of Razor's throw and is thrown into the outfield, forcing him to use the Back ability to return, though Hisoka is also injured, complicating their situation. Despite the odds, Gon devises a plan to defeat Razor, but it requires Killua's assistance to succeed.

Gon, Killua, and Hisoka team up to intercept Razor's most powerful throw in a high-stakes game of dodgeball. After managing to catch the ball, Gon uses all his strength to throw it back at Razor. The game reaches its final and most critical moments.

To advance in the game, the players must confront Genthru. Tsezgerra suggests distracting him for three weeks to give Gon time to prepare, but Team Tsezgerra's brief absence from the game results in an unexpected meeting with Mr. Battera.

Genthru turns his attention to Gon and his team, resulting in a confrontation in which Gon fights Genthru, Killua battles Sub, and Bisky faces Bara. Tsezgerra's tea does not appear in the action.

Genthru displays significant strength in his battle against Gon, but as Gon continues to fight, Genthru employs the Little Flower technique, which results in serious injury to Gon.

Gon and his friends, having defeated Genthru and collected 99 forbidden cards, enter the final competition, a quiz tournament open to all participants. They win the tournament, and Gon is awarded the Ruler's Invitation.

Gon and Killua use special cards obtained from a game to attempt a warp to Ging, but instead arrive at a man who quickly overpowers them. Despite the man's initial hostility, Gon feels an odd sense of familiarity with him.

Gon and Killua join Kite's team to investigate the Chimera Ants, a species of dangerous insects capable of passing traits from their prey to their offspring. As the team delves deeper, the Chimera Ants begin targeting humans, raising concerns about the potential threat they pose.

Kite uses his ability to analyze the discovery site of the Chimera Ant arm and study ocean currents to trace the main Chimera Ant to a technologically isolated nation. As the group prepares for confrontation, the Chimera Ants continue to evolve at an accelerated rate.

Gon and his companions enter the restricted area NGL after passing a strict border checkpoint, suspecting the presence of the Chimera Ant. Inside, they discover ten other competing Hunter teams already present, while the Chimera Ants, now exhibiting distinct personalities and new identities, continue launching attacks on humans.

Pokkle and Ponzu use Ponzu's bees to send urgent messages to the Hunter Association, seeking help in dealing with the Chimera Ants. Meanwhile, the Chimera Ants attack Gyro, the leader of NGL, and take his weapons. As the situation becomes more intense, Gon's group receives one of Ponzu's messages.

Gon, Killua, and Kite encounter a ruined village where they confront their first Chimera Ant, a strong and swift opponent that unsettles the boys. Kite advises them to either fight or retreat, setting the stage for a difficult decision.

After some aggressive Chimera Ants consume the former leaders of the NGL and become more menacing, Gon is reprimanded by Kite for turning away from the disturbing scene. The group faces a desperate fight for survival as a Chimera Ant begins to grasp the fundamentals of Nen.

The Hunter Association dispatches an expedition to eradicate the Chimera Ants, while Gon and his allies become targets of the ants due to their rare human traits. They participate in one-on-one battles against Chimera Ant commanders, overcoming them with relative ease, although Kite expresses unease about the circumstances.

As Gon, Killua, and Kite move closer to the Chimera Ant nest, Neferpitou, one of the Royal Guards, awakens. After capturing and interrogating a surviving Hunter, Neferpitou uncovers important information about Nen, including the methods for awakening and utilizing its power.

As the Chimera Ants reunite to enhance their Nen abilities, Neferpitou encounters Kite, who urges Gon and Killua to escape when faced with overwhelming odds. After Kite loses his arm and Gon is knocked unconscious by Killua, the two flee the NGL. Killua is later approached by Chairman Netero, who has arrived to eliminate the Chimera Ants alongside Pro Hunters Morel and Knov.

Gon and Killua meet Palm, a student of Knov, and learn they must defeat Knuckle and Shoot, students of Morel, within a month to join the Extermination Squad and return to the NGL. To improve their chances, Palm recruits Biscuit to train them intensively. Meanwhile, Shaiapouf, the second Royal Guard of the Chimera Ants, awakens at their nest.

After completing their training, Biscuit sends the exhausted Gon and Killua to test themselves against Knuckle, who confidently asserts they cannot move him, but Gon's powerful strike disproves this, prompting Knuckle to agree to help train them. Meanwhile, Neferpitou attempts to revive Kite, Netero's team targets small Chimera Ant groups, drawing the attention of the Ant captains, and the King grows stronger within the Queen's womb. As Gon and Killua continue training with Biscuit and sparring with Knuckle, Shoot, one of Morel's disciples, begins planning how to deal with them.

As Netero's deadline approaches, the chairman and his allies proceed to systematically eliminate the remaining Chimera Ant squads. While the Ant captains deliberate on their next course of action, the final royal guard member, Menthuthuyoupi, is born. At the same time, Gon and Killua complete their training and get ready to confront Knuckle in a real battle.

During his battle with Knuckle, Gon discovers a critical flaw in his Janken technique, but he cleverly turns the weakness into an advantage until he collapses from exhaustion. With the final match scheduled for the next day, Biscuit trains Killua and warns him that if he loses, he must leave Gon.

Gon and Killua face off against the opponents Knuckle and Shoot, with Gon taking on Knuckle and Killua engaging Shoot. Using his aura-sensing abilities, Gon successfully tracks Knuckle, but is unexpectedly attacked by LoanBoy, who strikes his left arm. At the same time, Killua struggles in his battle against Shoot, finding himself at a disadvantage.

The Queen successfully gives birth to the King, a powerful entity that overwhelms the Chimera Ants with its intimidating presence. Pitou, Pouf, and Youpi pay homage to the King, but in doing so, they turn their backs on the Queen.

The queen dies from her injuries despite efforts to save her, leaving Colt with the name she had chosen for the king, "Meruem." A final offspring is found within her, and Morel pledges to protect both it and the new king, vowing to put an end to human consumption. At the same time, the other squad leaders set out to establish new colonies, while the king and his royal guard make their way to the neighboring country of East Gorteau.

After East Gorteau is conquered by the king, Gon and Killua return to face Palm's anger over their broken promise. However, she is swayed by Gon's willingness to accept a date with her. Upon learning from Morel that Kite has been located, Gon keeps the date, while Killua follows from a distance, expecting danger. His anticipation is confirmed when Rammot confronts him.

After being pierced by one of Illumi's needles, Killua wrestles with his natural urge to flee and his resolve to protect Gon, eventually breaking free and defeating Rammot. At the same time, Gon's bond with Palm begins to unravel when he confesses that he cannot remain with her. As Shoot continues his investigation, Morel and Knuckle confront Cheetu, a rogue Chimera Ant.

After a brief conflict with Cheetu, Morel and Knuckle return to Gon and Killua just as they reunite with Kite, only to find him transformed into a mindless rogue by Neferpitou, prompting Gon to vow revenge. The group travels to East Gorteau, where the government orders all citizens to gather in the capital for an unspecified event in ten days. Suspecting a Chimera Ants' scheme, Netero coordinates with the others to plan an attack on the king and royal guard the night before the event.

Six members of the Phantom Troupe arrive in Meteor City to eliminate a colony of rogue Chimera Ants after news of their existence spreads globally.

The Phantom Troupe arrives at Zazan, the leader of the Ants, overcoming all resistance in their path. Feitan confronts Zazan alone and must reveal his full strength to defeat her, shocking even his own allies.

Gon and Killua part ways as they enter East Gorteau to infiltrate the palace, but Gon is quickly ambushed by Ants under Meleoron's control, whose stealth abilities make him hard to detect.

Gon confronts his enemies while Killua works to protect nearby villages from the Chimera Ants, though his efforts are complicated by the government, which is controlled by the Royal Guards and imposes martial law. Meanwhile, Shoot and Knuckle track down Cheetu and attempt to stop him.

Leol's group is sent by the Royal Guard to stop Killua's actions, while Gon meets Meleoron, who attempts to negotiate with him while hiding his true intentions.
