In feudal Japan, the half-demon Inuyasha is sealed away by the priestess Kikyo. Centuries later, he is awakened by Kagome, a girl who has traveled through time from the modern era. Kagome is shocked to discover that the sacred Shikon Jewel, an object that enhances the power of demons, emerges from a cut on her body.

Kagome discovers that she might be the reincarnation of Kaede's late older sister, the priestess Kikyo, who had sealed Inuyasha with her arrow. The Carrion Crow demon, seeking the Shikon Jewel, kidnaps Kagome, but Inuyasha arrives to rescue her. Kagome defeats the Carrion Crow with an arrow, causing the Shikon Jewel to shatter into pieces.

Kagome possesses the ability to see fragments of the Shikon Jewel, while Inuyasha has the power to fight and defeat demons. Their combined abilities are necessary to collect the scattered shards of the jewel, although they often have difficulty working together. The demon Yura, who seeks the jewel, incites villagers to attack Inuyasha.

Kagome returns to the present day and is relaxing at home when Inuyasha arrives, carrying some of Yura's demonic hair on his body. Concerned, Kagome and Inuyasha travel back to feudal Japan to confront and defeat the Yura of the Hair.

Kagome discovers that Inuyasha is a half-demon, the son of a human mother and a dog demon. Inuyasha's half-brother, Sesshomaru, arrives in search of their father's tomb. To manipulate Inuyasha, Sesshomaru brings what appears to be Inuyasha's deceased human mother. However, the woman is later revealed to be a demon known as a muonna.

The muonna forces Inuyasha to reveal the location of his father's grave. Sesshomaru removes Inuyasha's right eye, the black pearl, and uses it to open the entrance to the tomb. Kagome is angered by Sesshomaru's actions and decides to accompany Inuyasha as he pursues Sesshomaru. Inside the tomb, they find a memento of Inuyasha's father—the sword Tetsusaiga.

Kagome is able to pull out the Tetsusaiga. Sesshomaru attempts to kill her, prompting Inuyasha to become angry and fight to protect Kagome. His determination to defend a human causes the Tetsusaiga to transform into its true form, a fang sword.

In the Kai Province, there is a young samurai named Nobunaga, a clumsy but earnest young man. He has heard rumors about the man to whom the princess, his childhood friend, has married. Nobunaga attempts to save the lord of the castle, who is possessed by a toad demon.

Shippo is a demon fox whose father was killed by the Thunder Brothers, Hiten and Manten. He steals the Shikon Jewel shards from Kagome in order to avenge his father.

Inuyasha arrives to rescue Kagome from Manten, but Hiten takes the opportunity to devour the sacred jewel shard that Manten possesses, absorbing his demon powers in the process. Hiten then attacks Inuyasha using his Raigekijin, putting Inuyasha in a difficult position. To defend himself, Inuyasha uses the scabbard of the Tetsusaiga.

Kagome has returned to the present day to take a test. At the same time, a noh mask known as the Mask of Flesh begins a violent search for the Shikon Jewel shards. Kagome's younger brother, Sota, makes several attempts to call Inuyasha to Kagome's rescue.

Kagome encounters a Soul Piper, a demon responsible for consoling the spirits of children. She assists Mayu, a girl on the verge of becoming an evil spirit, in moving on.

Inuyasha, a half-demon, has a secret: he turns human once a month. On that day, Inuyasha and his companions encounter Nazuna and take shelter at a mountain temple. They fall into a trap set by Kumogashira, and the sacred jewel shards are stolen from them. Inuyasha is then injected with poison.

The ogress Urasue steals the grave of Kikyo, the priestess who had sealed away Inuyasha fifty years earlier. She brings Kikyo's body back to life by using the ashes of Kikyo's bones and soil from her grave. However, Kikyo's soul has already been reincarnated into a different body.

Kikyo is revived when Kagome's soul flows into her. She attempts to kill Inuyasha, but Kagome reclaims her soul. Fifty years earlier, Kikyo had asked Inuyasha to use the Shikon Jewel to become human. However, on the day of their promise, someone resembling Inuyasha severely injured Kikyo. Inuyasha later discovers that there is a mysterious individual who caused them to fight.

Miroku, a delinquent priest known for his womanizing behavior, has been collecting shards of the Shikon Jewel and takes Kagome's shards by force. Inuyasha pursues him and confronts Miroku to reclaim the shards. In response, Miroku uses his priestly abilities and activates the wind tunnel in his hand, a curse he was born with, to defend himself and resist Inuyasha's demands.

Kotatsu is a painter who experiences a dream in which he achieves success by commanding an army of ogres created with ink infused with a sacred jewel shard. Miroku, Inuyasha, and the others become involved in safeguarding the princess that Kotatsu is in love with.

Naraku appears before Sesshomaru and offers him an arm containing a sacred jewel shard. Sesshomaru attaches the arm to his own body and confronts Inuyasha and the group in an attempt to steal the Tetsusaiga.

Sesshomaru fights Inuyasha using the Tetsusaiga with his borrowed arm, while Inuyasha defends himself with the sword's scabbard. As they strike each other simultaneously, Inuyasha closes the distance, tears off Sesshomaru's arm, and retrieves the Tetsusaiga. Later, upon discovering Naraku's plan, Inuyasha becomes worried that Kagome may die.

Kagome is stripped of the sacred jewel shards and is sent back to the present day, where she is unable to return to feudal Japan. Resuming her normal life, she agrees to go on a date with Hojo. At the same time, Inuyasha and the group work to uncover more information about the enigmatic Naraku.

Kagome returns to the shrine during a date with Hojo and senses the presence of Shikon Jewel shards, prompting her to return to feudal Japan. There, Naraku reveals that fifty years prior, Onigumo was in love with Kikyo. The demons drawn to Onigumo by his malice eventually devoured him, giving rise to the demon known as Naraku.

Kikyo, who has been resurrected, continues to live as a priestess. A monk who discovers that Kikyo is no longer alive attempts to help her move on, but she ends up killing him. Inuyasha rescues the monk's disciples and rushes to Kikyo when he hears the priestess's name.

Kikyo paralyzes Kagome and appears before Inuyasha. She has been collecting the souls of deceased girls and expresses her resentment toward him. Inuyasha admits he has never forgotten her. When he kisses Kikyo, she attempts to pull him into hell. However, Inuyasha hears Kagome's voice and regains his awareness.

Sango, a demon slayer, is invited to Hitomi Castle along with her father, the leader of the demon slayers, and her younger brother, Kohaku. However, the invitation is a trap. At the same time, the undefended village is attacked by a horde of demons and destroyed. Naraku seizes the Shikon Jewel shards that they had been collecting and departs.

Sango confronts Inuyasha, believing him to be her enemy. Naraku's scheme involves provoking her into a deadly battle by manipulating the power of the Shikon Jewel shard. However, Sango heeds Kagome's advice and no longer doubts Inuyasha's intentions.

Sango reveals the secret origin of the Shikon Jewel. Midoriko, a priestess with immense spiritual power, merged with numerous demons during a battle to the death. She absorbed the demons' souls into herself, then extracted her own soul and died. The Shikon Jewel is formed from her soul.

Inuyasha and the group encounter Taromaru, the son of a village chieftain. They travel to the Temple of the Water God, where they discover that children are being sacrificed. The Water God possesses a sacred treasure and plays tricks on the group.

After Miroku sucks a mantis demon into his Wind Tunnel, the demon manages to tear it apart. Panicked, Miroku returns to the home of his mentor, Mushin, to have it repaired. Haunted by memories of his father's death, Miroku must come to terms with his Wind Tunnel as demons attack Mushin's temple.

Naraku uses one of Sango's fellow demon slayers as a bargaining chip to try to persuade Sango into giving him Inuyasha's sword, Tetsusaiga.

In an attempt to save Kohaku, Sango steals Inuyasha's Tetsusaiga and gives it to Naraku. However, this leads to a battle between them and Naraku.

While searching for an antidote to cure the sick Kilala, Inuyasha and Kagome encounter the herb garden of the half-demon Jinenji, who is frequently bullied by the prejudiced local villagers.

Inuyasha and the others come upon a cave where demons are engaged in a deadly battle. They soon learn that Naraku is using the fight to find a new demon to incorporate into his own body. The strong demonic aura, however, draws Kikyo into the situation.

At Naraku's behest, Kikyo ensnares the Inuyasha group with an illusionary mist, inducing them into experiencing nightmarish visions.

Inuyasha and the others are introduced to Totosai, the swordsmith who forged Inuyasha's Tetsusaiga and Sesshomaru's healing sword, Tenseiga.

Inuyasha and Sesshomaru continue their battle over the Tetsusaiga. After the fight, as Sesshomaru recovers, a young orphan girl named Rin attempts to bring him food. When her village is attacked by wolf demons, Sesshomaru repays her kindness by coming to her aid. At the same time, Kagome detects a Shikon Jewel shard. Inuyasha and the group follow her to the attacked village, where they are soon surrounded by wolves and Koga.

When Koga, a wolf demon, kidnaps Kagome and Shippo, Inuyasha, Miroku, and Sango embark on a rescue mission. However, they must first confront another enemy before they can reach their captured companions.

Inuyasha and the group must confront the Birds of Paradise before they can reach the wolf den. Meanwhile, at the den, Koga reveals his true feelings for Kagome. As the final battle with the Birds takes place, the question remains: will Inuyasha's jealousy cost Koga his life?

Kagome returns home to the modern era after an argument with Inuyasha. As she waits for him to apologize, she spends time with her friends, and Hojo once again approaches her. Meanwhile, Inuyasha seeks advice from Kaede regarding the situation.

While Inuyasha's group follows a demon bear carrying a jewel shard, Koga meets with members of the northern demon pack, who inform him of their plan to attack a castle where a man possesses multiple jewel shards. As the pursuit leads Inuyasha and his allies to the castle, they encounter Koga, who is enraged by the massacre of the wolf demons.

As Miroku and Sango battle Naraku's demon puppet, Inuyasha and Koga engage in a fierce fight, while Kagura intends to kill the victor.

Inuyasha and his companions encounter an orphan named Koharu, a young woman who believes she is in love with Miroku, due to his having helped her three years earlier. When Koharu requires assistance once more, they help her and find her a home in a new village. However, when Naraku sends Kagura and Kanna to attack Inuyasha and his group, Koharu and the villagers are drawn into Naraku's scheme and used as pawns in his plan.

Inuyasha and his group find themselves under attack from multiple enemies at once. Kanna targets Kagome, attempting to trap her soul in her mirror while Sango lies unconscious in the same room. At the same time, Koharu tries to stab Miroku, and Inuyasha faces off against Kagura. The question remains whether Inuyasha can successfully use his Wind Scar to defeat her.

Despite still recovering from severe injuries, Inuyasha engages in battle with Goshinki, a demon devouring an entire village.

Sesshomaru visits the swordsmith Kaijinbo to commission a new sword forged from the fangs of Goshinki, the demon responsible for breaking Tetsusaiga. However, an unforeseen event occurs when Kaijinbo launches an attack on Inuyasha during the night of the new moon, when Inuyasha transforms into his human form.

Inuyasha, struggling with the heavy Tetsusaiga, attempts to defend himself against Kaijinbo, who has been taken over by Tokijin. At the same time, Sesshomaru is searching for Kaijinbo and the sword he had ordered. The question remains whether Inuyasha will be able to hold his own when Sesshomaru comes to reclaim Tokijin.

Naraku sends his two new incarnations, Juromaru and Kageromaru, to attack Koga, as well as Inuyasha and his companions. Can Inuyasha and Koga work together as a team to defeat these new foes?

After Inuyasha and the group recover from their battle with Juromaru and Kageromaru, Kagome returns home. At the same time, Naraku pursues Kikyo, forcing her to flee for her life.

Sesshomaru learns from the wise tree-demon Boku'seno that when Inuyasha transforms into a demon, his demon blood takes full control, turning him into a mindless killing machine. Meanwhile, Inuyasha and the others arrive at a village that is being ruthlessly held under the control of the Moth Demon Gatenmaru and his band of thieves.

Inuyasha transforms into a demon once again when confronted by Gatenmaru's deadly attack, which targets him, Miroku, and the defenseless women of a village. Sesshomaru arrives to verify the truth of what Boku'seno had told him about Inuyasha's demonic nature.

Totosai informs Inuyasha that piercing the heart of Ryukotsusei, the demon responsible for giving his father a mortal wound, will cause his Tetsusaiga to become lighter. Hearing this, Inuyasha resolves to kill Ryukotsusei.

Shippo develops a crush on Satsuki, a girl who hopes to wish her dead brother back to life with a fake Shikon shard.

Sango and Miroku investigate a demon princess who is stealing the men from a village.

After Sango leaves to repair her damaged Hiraikotsu, Inuyasha and the others encounter a demon tree and a sage named Tokajin, who uses humans to nourish the tree in an attempt to grow a fruit of immortality. The group is captured by Tokajin in some way, and the events unfold on the night of the new moon, during which Inuyasha temporarily becomes human.

After Sango leaves to repair her damaged Hiraikotsu, Inuyasha and the others encounter a demon tree and the Peach Man, who uses humans to feed it in an effort to grow a fruit of immortality. The four are eventually caught by the Peach Man in some way, and it also happens to be the night of the New Moon, during which Inuyasha becomes human.

While repairing her injured Hiraikotsu at her home village, Sango encounters two sisters who request that she teach them everything she knows about demon slaying.

Naraku seeks the assistance of Tsubaki, a dark priestess harboring a fifty-year-old grudge against Kikyo, to possess Kagome and use her as a means to kill Inuyasha.

Following a confrontation with Kikyo, Tsubaki leaves to face Inuyasha and the others.

Kagome battles Tsubaki's curse from within herself while Inuyasha and the others continue their struggle against Tsubaki and her group of demons.
