Alice, Julie, and Reika gain unexpected attention in their school after witnessing a violent incident at The Cyberia. Meanwhile, Lain receives a mysterious illegal computer chip and begins to suspect she is being watched.

Several players of the online game PHANTOMa experience unexplained deaths, prompting Lain to investigate the mysterious phenomenon. Her increasing fascination with the digital world raises concerns among her father and friends Mika and Alice.
