Set in 1990 New York City during the "Golden Age" of hip-hop, the story continues where the original film left off, as the genre reaches new creative heights but remains largely unembraced by corporate America. Nikki secures a coveted position as assistant to the charismatic but unpredictable Barry Fouray. Meanwhile, her close friend and producer DeeVee collaborates with rapper Ahm, who is under police investigation for murder. As they navigate the competitive world of hip-hop, the question remains: how far will these ambitious young artists go to achieve success?
