The Handmaids Tale
In a theocratic regime where women are reduced to breeding vessels, a Handmaid secretly resists the oppressive system while navigating the dangerous balance between survival and rebellion.
The Handmaid's Tale is a dystopian science fiction novel by Canadian author Margaret Atwood, published in 1985. It is set in a near-future New England that has been transformed into the theocratic, totalitarian regime of the Republic of Gilead. The story follows Offred, a woman who has been reduced to the role of a "Handmaid"—a position imposed on women who are forced to bear children for the ruling class. The novel explores themes of oppression, gender roles, and resistance in a society that enforces strict religious and patriarchal control. Offred's first-person narrative provides a personal account of life under Gilead, highlighting the loss of individual freedoms and the dehumanizing effects of state-sanctioned subjugation.
