The narrative centers on the Onedin family, particularly James's brother and business partner, shop owner Robert, and his sister Elizabeth, offering a portrayal of life and customs of the period both at sea and on land. The series also highlights developments in business and shipping, including the transition from wooden to steel ships and from sailing ships to steamships. It explores the role of shipping in broader historical events, such as international politics, uprisings, and the slave trade.
