The Wild Wild West
*The Wild Wild West* is an American television series that was developed during a period when the television western genre was declining in favor of the spy genre. Conceived by its creator, Michael Garrison, as "James Bond on horseback," the series is set during the presidency of Ulysses Grant. It follows Secret Service agents James West and Artemus Gordon as they solve crimes, protect the President, and thwart the schemes of megalomaniacal villains seeking to take control of all or part of the United States. The show incorporates various fantasy elements, including technologically advanced devices used by both the agents and their adversaries. The blend of a Victorian-era setting with Verne-esque technology has led some to credit the series with influencing the origins of the steampunk subculture.
