Thorfinn, a young boy in Iceland, dreams of adventure and a distant paradise known as Vinland, inspired by tales from the explorer Leif. Living a quiet life with his father Thors, a retired warrior, Thorfinn's world changes when Thors rescues a runaway slave, setting off a chain of events that will shape his destiny. The story follows Thorfinn as he grows into a true warrior during a time of conflict and transformation.

In 1002, as tensions escalate between England and Denmark, the Jomsvikings return to Thorfinn's village to retrieve Thors, their former leader, for an upcoming battle. To safeguard his people from capture, Thors reluctantly reenters the conflict, confronting his troubled history in a bid to protect his family and home.

Askeladd, leading a Viking force of a hundred men, is ordered by Floki of the Jomsvikings to kill Thors, formerly known as the Troll of Jom. Meanwhile, the villagers, unaware of the impending conflict, eagerly prepare for their first battle, with Thorfinn among them. Thors and his warriors are set to begin a challenging voyage to England.

Thors and his men are ensnared in a trap set by Askeladd, leading to a perilous confrontation where Thors uses his immense strength to overpower many of Askeladd's warriors. Faced with the challenge of rescuing his son and others from a village unaccustomed to violence, Thors must make a difficult and fateful choice.

Thorfinn, seeking revenge for the murder of his father Thors by Askeladd, hides aboard Thor's ship and endures the hardships of starvation and thirst while waiting for his chance. As his strength dwindles, he resolves to strike Askeladd while he sleeps, armed only with his sword.

Thorfinn takes his first life and gradually becomes a more proficient killer as he continues to take more lives over time. During a battle, he is struck by an arrow and falls unconscious, after which an English woman and her daughter assist in his recovery.

Askeladd temporarily leaves the war against England and seeks alternative means of income, leading him to a conflict among the Franks where he plans to seize their treasure. He sends Thorfinn, now a hardened 16-year-old Viking, ahead as a messenger to carry out part of his scheme.

Askeladd's men return to the Danish village of Gorm on the Jutland Peninsula with the treasure obtained from the Franks to spend the winter. Thorfinn challenges Askeladd to a duel, seeking reward for delivering the head of the Frankish captain. Though Thorfinn has improved his combat skills, he remains outmatched by Askeladd.

In October 1013, King Sweyn of Denmark launches an invasion of London with a Viking fleet, including Askeladd's mercenaries, aiming to seize London Bridge. Despite their efforts, the bridge proves unbreakable due to the betrayal of the powerful Viking Thorkell the Tall. Askeladd offers Thorfinn a duel as a reward if he can kill Thorkell.

Askeladd's forces split from the Danish army and head west to attack a village. Thorfinn, angered by the soldiers' actions, abandons them and vows revenge for his father's death. He meets Askeladd on a hill, where the latter speaks cryptically about Britannia, the passage of time, and the prophecy of Ragnarok.

Thorkell captures Canute and pursues the main Danish army, despite Ragnar's objections to confronting 16,000 soldiers with only 500 men. Thorkell explains his motivation by recounting the legend of Valhalla, a revered Norse afterlife reserved for warriors who perish in battle.

Askeladd and his men are fleeing from Thorkell but are stopped by the Severn River. Askeladd gives a letter to an old ferryman, urging him to deliver it to the other side. Upon recognizing the recipient's name, the old man immediately begins his journey across the river.

Askeladd flees with Canute across the river into Wales to escape Thorkell, but his men are ambushed by soldiers near the border of Brycheiniog. Askeladd tries to negotiate with a messenger and discloses his intentions.

Askeladd and his warriors alter their route and head back to Gainsborough, navigating the treacherous Earldom of Mercia during a severe snowstorm. They encounter a small village amid the blizzard and decide to take action.

Thorkell, after the loss of Canute, pauses his campaign in central England. He reflects on the approaching end of the war between Denmark and England, lamenting its conclusion. Soon after, he learns of a new development that shifts his focus.

Askeladd and his men are ambushed by the English army in a village they intended to use as a winter camp. After capturing and questioning the English captain, Askeladd learns that their location was betrayed and that Thorkell is on his way. The revelation unsettles Askeladd's men.
