Salt of the Earth
Synopsis
At New Mexico’s Empire Zinc mine, Mexican‑American workers protest unsafe working conditions and wages that are lower than those of their Anglo counterparts. Ramon Quintero helps organize the strike, but he is portrayed as hypocritical because he treats his pregnant wife, Esperanza, with similar unfairness. When an injunction prevents the men from protesting, gender roles reverse: women take to the picket lines while the men remain at home.
