Biography

Alice Brady was born in New York City on November 2, 1892. She developed an early interest in the stage, influenced by her father, the prominent Broadway producer William A. Brady. After participating in several stage productions, Alice was discovered by movie producers in New York, which was then the center of the film industry. Her first film role came at age 22 in *As Ye Sow* (1914). She quickly became active in film, appearing in three productions in 1915 and nine the following year. Brady was among the few actresses who successfully transitioned from the silent film era to the sound era. In 1936, she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in *My Man Godfrey* (1936). The next year, she won the Oscar in the same category for her performance in *In Old Chicago* (1938). Alice Brady died of cancer in New York City on October 28, 1939, at the age of 46. Her final film that year was *Young Mr. Lincoln* (1939).
