Charles Bronson was an American actor known for his roles in action films, noted for a rugged appearance and physical presence. He was born into poverty in Ehrenfeld, Pennsylvania, a coal‑mining town, and worked in the mines before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1943 during World War II. After completing his military service he pursued acting, joining a theatrical troupe and studying the craft. In the 1950s he appeared in supporting roles in films and television, including anthology drama series where he often played the lead. Bronson’s first major cinematic leading role was in the 1958 film *Machine‑Gun Kelly*.
