Biography

Charles Laughton was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, England, to Eliza (Conlon) and Robert Laughton, hotel keepers of Irish and English descent, respectively. He received his education at Stonyhurst, a highly esteemed Jesuit college in England, and at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he earned a gold medal. His first appearance on stage was in 1926. In 1937, Laughton formed his own film company, Mayflower Pictures Corp., with Erich Pommer. He became an American citizen in 1950. Laughton achieved great success on both stage and film, and was known for many staged readings, particularly of George Bernard Shaw. He died in Hollywood, California, at the age of 63.
