Stephen Bishop(I)

Stephen Bishop, a singer and songwriter, was born on November 14, 1951, in San Diego, California. He was inspired to pursue music after watching the Beatles on *The Ed Sullivan Show*. During high school, he formed a band called the Weeds, which performed at local fraternity events. In the late 1960s, Bishop moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a professional musician. It took seven years before he was signed by ABC Records in 1976, following a discovery by Art Garfunkel. Prior to that, he had worked at a music publishing company, writing songs for artists such as Chaka Khan, Barbra Streisand, and The Four Tops. His debut album *Careless* produced the hit singles "On and On" and "Save It For a Rainy Day," went gold, and was nominated for a Grammy Award. His second album, *Bish*, also performed well. Bishop found significant success composing songs for films including *The China Syndrome*, *Roadie*, *Summer Lovers*, *Tootsie*, *Unfaithfully Yours*, *Micki & Maude*, *The Money Pit*, *The Boy Who Could Fly*, *Heart & Souls*, *How to Deal*, and *The Hitcher*. His theme song "Separate Lives" for the film *White Nights*, a duet between Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin, reached number one on the Billboard chart and was nominated for an Oscar. His songs have also been recorded by artists including Eric Clapton, Steve Perry, Kenny Loggins, Phoebe Snow, Johnny Mathis, Art Garfunkel, Stephanie Mills, and David Crosby. Bishop has appeared in minor roles in four films directed by John Landis, including a memorable comedic performance as an annoying folk singer whose guitar is smashed by John Belushi in *Animal House* (he also performed the end credits theme in a high-pitched falsetto). Stephen Bishop continues to record occasional albums and performs concerts internationally.
