In 1995, 11-year-old Eddie Huang and his family move from Washington D.C.'s Chinatown to suburban Orlando, Florida, where they encounter a vastly different cultural landscape. Struggling to adapt, Eddie grapples with feeling out of place in a community lacking the familiar Asian-American environment he grew up in.

Jessica believes the boys are not being sufficiently challenged and assigns them additional homework, prompting Louis to encourage her to adopt a less rigid teaching style.

The cul-de-sac hosts a NASCAR-themed block party, prompting Louis to push the family to network and promote Cattleman’s Ranch Steakhouse. Jessica struggles to fit in after befriending a well-liked woman who is disliked by the roller-blading moms. At the same time, Eddie tries to gain the respect of the neighborhood children.

Louis hires a professional to conduct a sexual harassment seminar for the restaurant staff after Jessica's efforts fail. Meanwhile, Eddie tries to impress his friends by pretending the seminar's tape is a "dirty movie" and inviting them to a sleepover at his house.

Eddie begins working at a restaurant to save up for a new video game.

A billboard advertising the restaurant is damaged in an act of vandalism, prompting concern among the staff. Meanwhile, Eddie attempts to impress a girl, navigating the challenges of his personal life alongside the business's issues.

Eddie attempts to connect with the only other Chinese student at his school, only to discover they share little in common, leading to disappointment. Meanwhile, Louis feels personally betrayed when Mitch takes a position at the competing restaurant, Golden Saddle.

Jessica becomes anxious about competing with a high-achieving realtor and delays taking the exam to obtain her real estate license.

Jessica's college boyfriend, Oscar Chow, visits, leaving Louis feeling slighted by her lack of concern over Oscar's presence. Unbeknownst to Jessica, Oscar is gay. At the same time, Eddie tries desperately to avoid participating in the school science fair.

Jessica's superstitions lead to complications when she sells a house with an unlucky address, and her misfortunes extend to Eddie, whose school presidential campaign is derailed by a small lie that grows out of control.

Louis and Jessica are forced to volunteer at their children's schools due to budget cuts. Eddie is surprised by his father's enthusiasm as Louis coaches the basketball team, drawing on his past experience as a semi-pro player in Taiwan, while Emery and Evan are taken aback by Jessica's strict and unconventional approach to directing their school play.

Jessica worries that her family has become too immersed in their life in Orlando and is losing their Chinese heritage, so she pushes them to reconnect with their roots, pressuring Louis to reject a country club invitation and compelling Eddie to research China for his school project.
