In 994, Vikings launch an attack on Wyvern Castle in Scotland, only to be repelled by its protective gargoyles. As the invaders retreat, vowing to return, a mystery lingers—someone within the castle might be secretly aiding them.

Goliath returns to the castle to discover most of his clan dead or missing, with the humans taken captive. The gargoyles battle the Vikings, free the captives, and are then cursed to remain in stone form constantly. A wealthy 20th-century businessman later becomes involved with their plight.

Detective Maza investigates Xanatos's tower after doubting his explanation for recent odd events, while Xanatos enlists the Gargoyles to recover stolen data.

Elisa and Goliath are attacked by commandos in the park, forcing them to flee, but Goliath turns to stone at dawn, leaving Elisa to evade their pursuers alone. After Goliath is reunited with an old associate by Xanatos at the castle, the Gargoyles agree to assist Xanatos in recovering stolen disks from Cyberbiotics.

The Gargoyles successfully complete a mission to attack data storage facilities, but their victory leads Xanatos to conclude that they are no longer useful to his plans.

A new team of superhero-like opponents known as The Pack arrives and proves to be a formidable challenge for the gargoyles.

Xanatos, preparing for his release from prison, considers his next move regarding the Gargoyles. He is approached by a mysterious figure named MacBeth, who proposes to take them away.

Xanatos donates the Eye of Odin, a valuable jewel, to the city museum, only to have one of his robotic gargoyles steal it later, setting up a false trail that implicates Goliath.

Demona attacks Goliath, seriously injuring him and forcing Hudson to guard him until sunrise. The situation recalls a mission from over a thousand years earlier, in which Hudson led an effort to retrieve a magical book needed to save a poisoned prince.

Elisa's brother is hired by Xanatos as a pilot and bodyguard, only to find himself targeted for assassination by the mercenaries Jackal and Hyena.

Demona and Xanatos, realizing that neither science nor magic can stop the gargoyles on its own, attempt to merge the two. Using remnants of gargoyles destroyed at Castle Wyvern in 994 AD and advanced cybernetics, they construct a new being named Coldstone.
