Zoe Hart, a confident and articulate New York medical graduate, faces a setback when she fails to secure a coveted fellowship. In a moment of uncertainty, she accepts an earlier offer from Dr. Harley Wilkes, a kind stranger she met at her graduation, to join his rural medical practice in Bluebell, Alabama.

Zoe attempts to gain acceptance in Bluebell by joining the Founder's Day parade, but an unexpected mishap complicates her efforts.

Zoe competes in a gumbo contest to prove her place in Bluebell, while Lavon's growing interest in both Zoe and Brick's new receptionist causes tension for Lemon. As personal feelings complicate relationships, Zoe and Brick must set aside their differences to help save a life.

A heat wave hits Bluebell, causing residents to act out of character as their inhibitions fade. Zoe finds herself drawn to Wade amid the rising temperatures, while Lemon attempts to impress George's parents but faces unexpected competition from Lavon and his date, Didi.
