I Spy

I Spy is an American television secret-agent adventure series that aired for three seasons on NBC from 1965 to 1968. The show starred Robert Culp as international tennis player Kelly Robinson and Bill Cosby as his trainer, Alexander Scott. The characters' travels under the guise of "tennis bums"—with Robinson playing tennis as an amateur among the wealthy in exchange for food and lodging, and Scott accompanying him—served as a cover for their true roles as top agents for the Pentagon. Their real work often involved pursuing villains, spies, and attractive women. The show was created by writers David Friedkin and Morton Fine, along with cinematographer Fouad Said, who together formed Three F Productions under Desilu Studios, where the series was produced. Fine and Friedkin served as co-producers and head writers, penning the scripts for 16 episodes, one of which Friedkin directed. Friedkin also acted in two episodes during the first season. Actor-producer Sheldon Leonard, known for his gangster roles in the 1940s and '50s, was the executive producer. He portrayed a gangster-villain in two episodes and made a humorous cameo as himself in a third. In addition, he directed one episode and served as an occasional second-unit director throughout the series.
