My Name Is Earl

Earl Hickey wins a $100,000 lottery ticket, only to lose it in a car accident, which leads him to a hospital and a period of introspection. There, he resolves to make amends for his past mistakes with the help of his brother, Randy, and motel maid Catalina. Together, they create a list of his transgressions. Earl begins his journey of redemption by addressing item 64: apologizing to Kenny James, a boy he had bullied in elementary school.

Earl attempts to reconcile with Donny, a dangerous criminal who was jailed for a robbery that Earl orchestrated. In an effort to make amends, Earl helps Donny's mother quit smoking. Meanwhile, Joy, after discovering that she is named in Earl's will, becomes determined to stop her inheritance by killing him.

Earl reflects on a past mistake from his high school years when he inadvertently cost Randy a crucial touchdown in a football game, and he now seeks to make amends.

At a Halloween party, Earl meets a woman and is initially attracted to her. However, after she removes her costume, he comes to the realization that they are incompatible and ends the relationship suddenly. Years later, he attempts to make amends for how he handled the situation.

Earl begins teaching English as a second language in an effort to complete a task on his personal karma list. Meanwhile, Ralph, an old acquaintance recently released from prison, reconnects with Earl and is encouraged to embrace the concept of karma. However, Ralph's intentions take a dark turn when he kidnaps Randy in an attempt to claim Earl's lottery winnings.

Earl assists Joy's former rival and her daughter in competing in a mother-daughter beauty pageant to replace a broken figurine. At the same time, Joy secretly enters the contest under her deceased mother's name, hoping to win the figurine and trade it for a hot tub.

Earl attempts to assist Scott in overcoming his growing obsession with golf, which started after Randy and he helped Scott improve his game in exchange for free beer. As Earl becomes more involved in Scott's life, his efforts put a strain on his friendship with Randy, causing him to wonder if he, rather than Scott, is the one who is truly consumed.

Darnell and Joy plan to get married, but Earl learns through Randy's invitation that he is not included. The situation escalates when Earl discovers the wedding is set for his birthday, preventing him from celebrating with friends. In a drunken state, Earl disrupts the event and accidentally injures Joy, adding "ruined Joy’s wedding" to his list of mishaps.

Earl seeks to fulfill his bucket list by correcting a past mistake that prevented his father from becoming mayor. Four years earlier, Carl Hickey ran for mayor with the goal of changing an airport noise route, but his campaign was harmed when Earl got into a public altercation with a police officer. Determined to make amends, Earl now works to help his father win the election and mend their strained relationship.

As Earl works to complete item seventy-four on his list—“always ruined Joy's Christmas”—he and Randy enter a radio contest with Catalina to win a car for Joy, in an effort to make up for his past inconsiderate gifts. At the same time, Earl learns that Joy's parents still believe he is their son-in-law and that they think he has just returned from Iraq. He agrees to keep up the ruse to prevent spoiling Joy's holiday, particularly because she is worried about how her father would react to the news of her new marriage.

Joy is denied enrollment for her children at Right Choice Ranch due to a past incident involving Earl. Earl, Randy, and Catalina visit the camp in an effort to make amends by constructing an ostrich pen. During their time there, Earl uncovers the true cause of the barn fire and decides to share the events that followed with Randy.

Earl and Randy try to return a stolen wallet but discover the theft has ruined a newlywed couple's honeymoon. In an effort to help, Earl takes a job at the groom's fast food restaurant, where he grows frustrated with the owner's poor treatment of employees. Earl begins to question how someone who lives comfortably in a nice home with a wife could remain unaffected by karma.

Earl checks off a task from his bucket list by returning his grandfather's stolen Weiner Hot Dog cart, but Ralph, who now works for a rival franchise, sabotages the effort by setting the cart on fire. To make amends, Earl comes up with an unusual plan and recruits Randy, Joy, Catalina, and Darnell to help him fix the situation.

Earl tries to fulfill the eighteenth item on his bucket list by giving an old friend a memorable day, motivated by feelings of responsibility for a story he told that may have contributed to the friend's arrest.

Earl views his ongoing car troubles as a personal sign that he needs to make amends for a past mistake, which involved stealing gas from a stranger's vehicle.

Earl is uneasy about returning a stolen laptop to a college professor, feeling out of his depth around intellectuals. His discomfort increases when he learns the professor is an attractive woman, though he experiences a momentary confidence boost when she compliments him and asks him to discuss his "list" in front of her class. At the same time, Randy enjoys the social aspects of fraternity life and becomes increasingly drawn to it.

Earl works to complete another item on his bucket list by addressing his past failure to pay taxes, aiming to make amends with the government.

On Mother's Day, Earl becomes aware that he has never given his mother a gift and attempts to make amends with a long-overdue present. As he and Randy get ready to deliver it, his mother redirects the attention, asking Earl to do something for his father as part of the gesture.

Earl attempts to check off one of his eccentric "Things to do before I die" list items by stealing a red "Take-a-number" machine, while Randy tries to talk him out of it by recalling their previous experience with the device during New Year's Eve 1999. At the same time, Darnell convinces the group that the Y2K computer glitch will result in the end of the world, leaving them as the last people on Earth.

Earl tries to complete an item from his bucket list by scaring a young boy using the concept of the boogeyman, but he eventually comes to understand the unintended and lasting effects his actions have on the child.

In episode forty-five, "Ditched Jessie to Marry Joy," Jessie, Earl's ex-girlfriend, returns to town with plans for revenge, forcing Earl to safeguard Joy at a lakeside retreat while Randy struggles to keep their whereabouts a secret.

Earl seeks to make amends for stealing a police officer's badge, which he discovers resulted in the officer's demotion. He takes action to help restore the officer's career.

Earl attempts to complete item 147 on his to-do list by shooting Gwen Waters with a BB gun, but he is instead compelled to assist her in reconnecting with her estranged father, a task that turns out to be more complicated than anticipated.

In the season finale, Earl attempts to address the first item on his karma list by returning ten dollars he once took from a man at Camden Market, only to discover he owes significantly more and must give up his entire lottery winnings. As he grapples with the consequences, Earl questions whether karma will ever work in his favor.
