As a spin-off of *The Vampire Diaries* and set in New Orleans, *The Originals* focuses on the Mikaelson siblings, the original vampires: Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah. Klaus seeks to reclaim the city from Marcel, his former protégé, who now controls New Orleans. Klaus originally founded the city but was forced to leave during its construction after being pursued by his father, Mikael, allowing Marcel to take over. Returning after many years, Klaus is driven by his ego to become the city's ruler. "Every King needs an heir," Klaus declares, accepting the unborn child of a hybrid and a werewolf, the first of its kind.
