Biography

Jeffrey Warren "Jeff" Daniels (born February 19, 1955) is an American actor who founded the non-profit Purple Rose Theatre Company in his home state of Michigan. He has appeared in numerous stage productions, both on and off Broadway, and was nominated for a Tony Award as Best Actor for the Broadway play *God of Carnage* (2009), alongside his three fellow cast members.

Daniels has had a successful film career, beginning with his debut in *Ragtime* (1981) and continuing through *State of Play* (2009). For his film roles, he has received three Golden Globe Award nominations, including for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy/Musical for his role in Woody Allen's *The Purple Rose of Cairo* (1985), which inspired the name of his theatre company. He has also been nominated by the Screen Actors Guild, the Satellite Awards, and received multiple nominations for his performance in *The Squid and the Whale*, including from the London Critics Circle Awards, the Independent Spirit Awards, the Chlotrudis Awards, and the Gotham Awards.
