Jonathan Ames, a young writer from Brooklyn, is struggling with personal and professional challenges. After a difficult breakup partly caused by his drinking, he finds himself unable to write his second novel and spends too much time socializing with his magazine editor. To avoid confronting his reality, Jonathan immerses himself in fantasies, taking on the role of a private detective. He is drawn to this alter ego because he longs to be a hero and a man of action.
