Atticus Freeman, a veteran and pulp-fiction enthusiast, returns to Chicago and then travels to Massachusetts with his uncle George and childhood friend Letitia to find his missing father and uncover the secrets of his late mother's ancestry. Their journey through the Midwest is fraught with peril, particularly as night falls.

Leti and George recover from their ordeal and settle into their surroundings at Ardham Lodge, while Atticus becomes wary of the enigmatic hosts, Christina Braithwhite and her father Samuel, who hint at his involvement in a mysterious "Sons of Adam" ceremony. Later, Tic, Leti, and George discover a clue potentially leading to Montrose, prompting each of them to confront painful personal memories.

Leti attempts to rebuild her bond with her sister Ruby by converting a dilapidated Victorian home in Chicago into a boarding house, but her efforts stir racial tensions in the neighborhood and awaken lingering spirits within the house. At the same time, Atticus struggles with guilt as Hippolyta, George's wife, demands the truth about his experiences in Ardham.

Leti questions Atticus about his secret plan to return to Florida after Christina unexpectedly appears. To find missing pages from an important document, Leti, Tic, and Montrose travel to Boston, joined by Hippolyta and Diana. Meanwhile, in Chicago, Ruby deals with a lost job opportunity with the help of a charming stranger.

Ruby, having struck a deal with William, transforms into a white woman, an experience that intensifies her frustration with racial inequality. Meanwhile, Montrose's betrayal triggers a violent outburst from Atticus, deeply unsettling Leti, and drives Montrose to seek solace with his hidden lover.

During the Korean War, nursing student Ji-Ah encounters a wounded soldier named Atticus, who does not remember their previous, violent meeting.

Hippolyta embarks on a journey across multiple dimensions in pursuit of truth and self-understanding, while Atticus travels to St. Louis to seek guidance from a long-time family associate.

Diana, emotionally troubled, becomes a target for Captain Lancaster. As a mysterious visitor from Lancaster's past arrives at the boarding house, Atticus and Leti take action to safeguard their own futures.

Hippolyta leads Leti, Tic, and Montrose to 1921 Tulsa in a mission to rescue Dee.

Having discovered where the Book of Names came from, the group returns to Ardham to perform a powerful spell.
