M*A*S*H

At the 4077th M.A.S.H. unit in Korea, doctors Hawkeye Pierce and Trapper John McIntyre learn that their Korean houseboy, Ho-John, has been accepted into Hawkeye's former college. To help fund Ho-John's trip to the United States, they organize a fundraising party featuring music, dancing, and raffles, including a weekend pass with nurse Lieutenant Dish for R&R in Tokyo.

The second episode of *MASH*, titled "To Market, to Market," first aired on September 24, 1972, and features the staff of the 4077th dealing with the absurdities of military supply chains and bureaucratic inefficiencies.

Trapper and Hawkeye try to prevent a new nurse from being transferred by Hot Lips and compete for her favor. To help keep her at the 4077th, Henry Blake forces Trapper to fight a large, intimidating soldier in a boxing match arranged by a rival commander. Hawkeye and Ugly John use an ether-soaked glove to ensure Trapper's victory, which impresses the nurse, while Margaret and Frank's attempt to expose the fix ends in failure when they are knocked down by the unconscious fighter.

Frank Burns is upset by what he perceives as Hawkeye Pierce's lack of respect, but his frustration grows when Colonel Henry Blake unexpectedly names Hawkeye chief surgeon. The 4077th celebrates Hawkeye's promotion while Frank and Margaret Houlihan express their disapproval to General Barker. During his visit, Barker observes the unit's blend of humor and efficiency through camp activities, a poker game, and a surgery session.

Sergeant Baker brings his moose to the camp, and Hawkeye attempts various methods—ranging from direct orders and a purchase offer to cheating at cards—to take the moose away from him. When Baker releases the moose but it refuses to leave, Hawkeye tries to train it to be self-sufficient.

The 4077th becomes the site for a military film about Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals, with Hawkeye cast as the lead and Margaret and Frank writing the script. Hawkeye, objecting to the film's propagandistic tone, re-shoots it in his own style, playing a satirical doctor and delivering a somber reflection on the realities of war.

Henry takes time for rest and relaxation, prompting Hawkeye to feign a breakdown in an attempt to get permission for himself and Trapper to leave the post as well.

John Hodges, a helicopter pilot nicknamed The Cowboy for his Western-style attire, arrives at the 4077th with a shoulder wound and anxiously awaits a letter from his wife, fearing she may be leaving him. As Henry Blake faces a series of misfortunes, Hodges offers to fly him to Seoul but later relents after receiving the reassuring letter and being persuaded by Hawkeye and Trapper to spare Henry.

Henry is awarded for leading the camp to the highest efficiency rating but is soon reassigned to Tokyo by General Hammond. In response, Frank takes a more rigid, military approach and seizes Hawkeye and Trapper's still. To bring Henry back, the two use forged passes and feign illness from Radar.

A series of thefts occurs at the camp, with personal items disappearing from several staff members. When the stolen goods are discovered in Hawkeye's locker, he is suspected, but he arranges for the items to be dusted for fingerprints, leading to the real thief, Ho-Jon, who confesses to needing money to bring his family from the North and to pay border guards.

Hawkeye brings a wounded North Korean soldier to The Swamp to prevent him from being sent out before recovering. To obtain blood for testing, Hawkeye and Trapper play a trick on Frank, taking a sample without his knowledge, which leads to complications when the soldier develops hepatitis. They must then conceal the situation from Frank, Margaret, and the other patients.

Hawkeye reflects on the Christmas season in Korea by writing a letter home, while Radar sends a jeep back to the States in pieces. Henry delivers his usual monthly lecture on sex using anatomical figures, Trapper assists in delivering a calf, and Klinger gets into a fight with Frank, which Father Mulcahy helps resolve. Hawkeye and Trapper play a prank on Margaret, and Hawkeye later flies to the front line dressed as Santa to assist a wounded soldier.

The nurses at the camp refuse to go out with anyone until Nurse Eddie finds a date, so they take drastic measures to help him. The men draw straws to determine who will accompany Eddie on a date, and Hawkeye ends up being chosen. Things go awry when Eddie's awkward behavior nearly leads to a confrontation between Hawkeye and another man, echoing the tensions of adolescent courtship.

Radar receives a Dear John letter, prompting Hawkeye and Trapper to attempt to cheer him up with a date, which doesn't go well. A new nurse at the camp, who shares his interest in poetry and music, takes an interest in him, and the two men help him prepare for their interactions. Meanwhile, Margaret tries to stop the relationship, but Hawkeye and Trapper intervene by distracting her with Frank until she gives in. Radar's refined tastes and eloquent expressions ultimately help him win her over.

Hawkeye devises a fictional doctor named Captain Jonathan S. Tuttle to secretly provide supplies to local orphans. To maintain the ruse, he forges a personnel file and redirects Tuttle's back pay to the orphanage. When General Clayton seeks to reward Tuttle's supposed heroism, Hawkeye fabricates a dangerous story involving a parachute jump, which Trapper's friend, Captain Murdoch, unknowingly complicates with fake dog tags and equipment.

Hawkeye and Trapper plan to have a ruthless colonel removed from the front by enlisting the help of Frank, Margaret, and an inebriated Henry, after becoming disillusioned by his willingness to sacrifice his men.

Frank injures his back while spending time with Margaret and is placed in traction, leading him to apply for the Purple Heart, claiming a technical frontline injury. Tommy Gillis, a friend of Hawkeye's and a war book writer, visits the camp, but is later brought in critically wounded and dies despite Hawkeye's efforts. A young soldier, eager for heroism, is treated for appendicitis and sent home with Frank's Purple Heart to preserve his sense of valor.

Hawkeye writes to his father about various camp events, including the arrival of a fraudulent surgeon, a bet involving him entering the mess tent naked unnoticed, Radar cheating on a high school exam, Margaret rejecting Frank's romantic overtures leading to his drunkenness, and a no-talent night at the camp.

The camp struggles with the harsh winter cold, but Hawkeye remains comfortable thanks to long johns sent by his father. The garment changes hands multiple times through various means—given as a gift, used as a gambling stake, traded, stolen, and offered to Father Mulcahy—before eventually returning to Hawkeye as a gesture of gratitude for a past medical favor.

While the camp is watching the Army/Navy football game, they are suddenly attacked and an unexploded bomb lands in the middle of the compound. The staff attempts to identify the bomb and prepare for the worst, with Hawkeye and Trapper tasked with disarming it. The bomb is eventually found to contain CIA propaganda leaflets rather than explosives.

Hawkeye and Frank clash over Frank's surgical skills, leading Hawkeye to take on a challenging operation that ends in failure. Struggling with self-doubt, Hawkeye leaves The Swamp, later reopening the patient's case and discovering a small, nearly imperceptible nick in the colon that even Frank acknowledges could have been missed by any surgeon.

Frank's constant verbal abuse of Ginger leads Hawkeye to play a prank by casting his arm while he sleeps. After Frank announces his transfer during a broadcast and Margaret decides to leave with him, Colonel Blake responds by assigning Hawkeye and Trapper to double post-operative duty until replacements for Burns and Houlihan can be found.

General Clayton announces a ceasefire, prompting celebration at the camp as Klinger gives away his dresses and locals begin dismantling the camp. Trapper remains skeptical, while Hawkeye claims marriage to avoid commitments to nurses. The festivities are cut short when wounded soldiers arrive, revealing the ceasefire never actually occurred.

Captain Kaplan, anxious about being sent home, drives himself to Kimpo but ends up in a crash that leaves him in a body cast. Meanwhile, Henry's wife goes into labor, and Henry, away from the hospital, has Radar check in constantly. The camp is visited by entertainer Jackie Flash, who performs for the troops.
