After ending her long-term relationship, Jess moves into an apartment with three men and attempts to re-enter the dating scene.

Nick and Schmidt persuade Jess to retrieve her belongings from her ex-boyfriend Spencer's apartment. There, she meets Winston, a new roommate who has recently returned from playing basketball in Latvia. Winston attempts to reclaim his former room from Schmidt.

The group is invited to a wedding, and Nick is worried about encountering his ex, so he asks Jess to accompany him as his date. At the same time, Winston takes his role as an usher very seriously, and Schmidt attracts the attention of two women.

Jess accidentally walks in on Nick naked, causing his self-confidence to plummet—just after an attractive co-worker agrees to go out on a date with him. Meanwhile, Winston becomes obsessed with learning pop-culture references online.

Cece convinces Jess that Nick has feelings for her beyond just being a roommate, while Schmidt attempts to help solidify the relationship between Cece and Nick.

Jess invites Paul, a music teacher at her school on whom she has always had a crush, to the gang’s big Thanksgiving dinner at the loft, which naturally goes horribly wrong.

Jess becomes jealous when Winston joins her troubled-youth handbell quartet and quickly proves to be a natural. At the same time, Nick and Schmidt get into a conflict over class differences when the toilet breaks, each proposing their own solution for getting it fixed.

When Jess decides to take her relationship with Paul to the next level, she seeks advice from the guys. At the same time, Schmidt tries to gain an advantage over his female office rival by sneaking into his boss's baby shower.

The gang attends Schmidt's holiday office party, and Jess becomes concerned when she receives an expensive gift from Paul.

When Schmidt's plans for his 29th birthday fall apart, Jess takes charge and enlists the help of her school's party-hungry vice principal. Meanwhile, Nick begrudgingly has his first date at Schmidt's party with a beautiful lawyer who harbors a secret, and the gang wonders who placed a $50 bill in the douchebag jar.

Nick becomes anxious when Julia is unwilling to define their relationship. At the same time, Jess asks Julia to assist her in avoiding a traffic ticket. Winston reconnects with an ex-boyfriend he had a casual encounter with, while Schmidt is confused about why his shower towel is consistently damp.

Despite Nick's objections, Jess is determined to win over the loft's grumpy landlord. In the process, she puts their living arrangement at risk, prompting the guys to reveal they've made some "unofficial" alterations to the apartment. At the same time, Schmidt attempts to interpret what he believes are mixed signals from his supervisor, Kim.

On Valentine's Day, Jess finds herself single for the first time and convinces Schmidt to be her wingman as she seeks a fling with a handsome stranger, aiming for an attachment-free experience. Meanwhile, Nick's romantic plans are disrupted when he ends up spending more time with Julia's law firm assistant than with Julia herself. Winston joins the girls for the holiday when Shelby invites him over.

When Jess attempts to intervene with a classroom bully, she ends up becoming the target of the problematic student. Schmidt is pleased with his post-Valentine's romantic escapades but frustrated that his partner wants to keep their relationship a secret; meanwhile, Nick experiences a downward spiral when Julia sends him a cactus.

When Nick is injured during a game of touch football and Jess learns that he has no health insurance, she takes him to her doctor friend, who is an OB-GYN. Concerned about his condition, the group comes together to support him, and Nick begins to reflect on his life as his minor back injury turns out to be potentially more serious than initially believed.

When Jess realizes that Schmidt is unfairly handling all the housework, she encourages him to "go on strike," which disrupts the usual dynamics of the loft. At the same time, Nick finds himself in a difficult situation when he has to pay Winston the money he owes after losing a poker game.

Jess begins a reluctant relationship with the affluent father of one of her students. At the same time, Nick tries to purchase a new cell phone, while Schmidt and Winston engage in an intense competition during a bar trivia game.

Jess's sophisticated date with Russell does not go as planned. At the same time, Nick's college friend visits and brings out Nick's inner frat boy to help him get over his breakup with Julia. Additionally, Winston panics when Shelby goes on a "girls" vacation, and Schmidt and Cece try to keep their relationship under the covers, but one of the friends discovers their secret.

Jess babysits Russell's pre-teen daughter for the weekend and meets his ex-wife. Meanwhile, Schmidt and Cece panic after they believe she is pregnant. In another subplot, Nick's new girlfriend may be too young, and Winston discovers that his new boss is a baby at heart.

Jess is concerned that she and Russell do not share the same level of passion that he once had with his ex-wife, Ouli. At the same time, Cece is hesitant to acknowledge her feelings for Schmidt and instead encourages him to go on a date with one of her Russian model roommates. Meanwhile, a dejected Nick redirects his energy into starting a new vegetable garden.

When Jess and Nick encounter their exes, Paul and Caroline, the group becomes concerned that they might revert to their previous romantic relationships. At the same time, Schmidt struggles to remain composed while dealing with a sensitive medical situation, Winston faces the repercussions of a rowdy night out with his boss, and Cece takes Schmidt to a nursing home to meet her grandmother.

When one of the roommates decides to move out of the loft, the group embarks on an unexpected trip to the desert. During the trip, Winston confronts his fear of the dark, Cece and Schmidt's relationship reaches a turning point, and Jess and Nick encounter a coyote.
