Wil and Amberle are captured by the Rovers Eretria and Cephalo while traveling back to the palace. However, their immediate peril is overshadowed by the greater threat of a deadly Fury. Wil must rapidly learn to use the power of the Elfstones in order to survive.

Amberle embarks on a dangerous quest to prove herself to the Ellcrys, while the Dagda Mor dispatches the Changeling, a formidable shape-shifting demon, to kill her and anyone who opposes it. The Changeling's power to take the form of any individual in the palace makes it difficult to detect and stop.

Amberle, Wil, and Eretria are forced to put aside their differences as they confront a series of perilous challenges, including the formidable threat of the Reaper.
