After leaving Barbados, Joey and Ross try to confess to each other that they are dating Rachel and Charlie, respectively, but they face repeated obstacles that prevent them from doing so. Meanwhile, Monica gets a new haircut, which disappoints Chandler, and Phoebe discovers that Mike has another girlfriend.

After Ross discovers Joey and Rachel's relationship, he invites Rachel, Joey, and Charlie to a dinner party at his apartment, which turns out to be an awkward experience for everyone. Meanwhile, Monica and Chandler are overwhelmed by the various adoption options they're considering, and Phoebe suggests they speak with a couple who has gone through the process themselves. However, things take a turn for the worse when Chandler's tendency to speak without thinking causes complications. Additionally, Phoebe is visited by her brother, Frank Jr., who is in a state of desperation as he can no longer cope with his precocious triplets.

Ross visits a spray-on tanning salon but does not follow the provided instructions, leading to complications. At the same time, Joey and Rachel face challenges as they attempt to shift their relationship from friendship to romance. In another subplot, Monica and Phoebe try to avoid a bothersome former neighbor who still resides in their building.

On Emma's first birthday, Ross and Rachel try to convince everyone to adjust their plans to attend her party. However, the celebration takes an unexpected turn when Emma's birthday cake is revealed.

Rachel tries to help her younger sister, Amy, become more responsible by letting her babysit Emma, despite Ross's strong objections, but soon regrets the decision. Meanwhile, Joey agrees to write a recommendation letter for Monica and Chandler's adoption agency but worries about not sounding intelligent enough. At the same time, Phoebe accidentally ruins Mike's surprise "anniversary" plans for her.

Ross is in contention for a prestigious paleontology grant offered by Dr. Benjamin Hobart. However, Hobart is Charlie's ex-boyfriend, with whom she remains deeply entangled. Monica and Chandler travel to Ohio, feeling both nervous and excited, to meet Erica Simmons, a young pregnant woman who is considering allowing them to adopt her child after it is born. Upon meeting her, they discover that due to a mix-up at the adoption agency, Erica mistakenly believes that Monica is a reverend and Chandler is a doctor. Meanwhile, Joey begins dating Phoebe's friend but irritates her with his territorial eating habits. At the same time, Rachel selects an outfit for Ross to wear on a date, but due to a mix-up, he ends up in an awkward situation.

After Phoebe and Rachel see Chandler getting into a car with an unknown blonde woman, they follow them to the suburbs. Concerned that Chandler might be cheating on Monica, they tell her, only to discover the woman is a real estate agent. Chandler and Monica have been secretly looking for houses and have been struggling with how to tell their friends about their plans. The group then comes together to reminisce about their good times in their shared apartment.

Joey appears as a celebrity contestant on *The $100,000 Pyramid*, hosted by Donny Osmond. At the same time, Phoebe's bachelorette party takes an unexpected turn when a stripper unexpectedly arrives. Meanwhile, Chandler and Ross attend a college reunion, which prompts them to reflect on a pact they made in 1987 during their time in college.

As Phoebe's wedding day nears, her wedding planner, Monica, drives those around her to frustration by enforcing a strict schedule for every detail. Phoebe grows increasingly annoyed and ultimately fires her. On the day of the wedding, New York experiences its worst snowstorm in 20 years, forcing a change in plans. Joey, stepping in for Phoebe's incarcerated father, takes his role far more seriously than expected. Joey asks Phoebe, who is fond of French culture, to help him learn the language before an important audition, but she soon grows frustrated with the effort. At the same time, Erica, the Bing children's surrogate mother, is in town and tells them that the baby's father might be a shovel murderer. In another development, Ross and Rachel grow closer after Rachel's sarcastic father, Dr. Green, has a heart attack.

Erica goes into labor, and the new parents, Monica and Chandler, find themselves facing more challenges than expected.
