Biography

Richard Milhous Nixon was the 37th president of the United States, serving from 1969 until his resignation in 1974. A member of the Republican Party, he previously represented California in the U.S. Congress and served as vice president under Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953 to 1961. During his presidency, Nixon oversaw a reduction in U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, initiated détente with the Soviet Union and China, supported the Apollo 11 Moon landing, and established the Environmental Protection Agency and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. His second term ended abruptly when he became the only U.S. president to resign from office, due to the Watergate scandal.
